History of The Bermuda Bowling Club, Inc.
The Bermuda Bowling Club will celebrate its 50thyear in 2024.
Bermuda Bowl now Warwick Lanes, was opened on January 5, 1961, with16 lanes. Ford Baxter’s idea of building a bowling centre led to the formation of Bermuda Recreations Ltd. With Sir John Plowman as President, Mr. Peter Perinchief was its first Manager.
Before Bermuda’s Lily Bowl opened, nearly 90% of Bermudians had never heard of Tenpins, but being athletically inclined, the game spread quickly and became as popular as the national sports of soccer and cricket. There was a need for more lanes, so lanes1–8 were built on the original parking lot and the property where the parking lot is now was purchased. Sadly, Lily Bowl had to be sold and in 1972 Bermuda Recreations Ltd. was bankrupt and closed Bermuda’s Bowl. However, the bowlers were not deterred, a Steering Committee was formed and negotiated with the Bank to purchase the Lanes. Warwick Lanes opened in 1974 and was incorporated in 1976 as the Bermuda Bowling Club, as owners and operators of Warwick Lanes.
